“When the National Theatre was built in London in the 1960s, it was a stormy event. The National Theater is built in the style called béton brut– or brutalism – consisting of dominative buildings founded in concrete. The new theater was described as a cunning way to “sneak a nuclear power plant into the heart of London”. But even though the brutal, grey concrete buildings can seem cold and anti-human, the broken lines create a certain aesthetics which for me represents something cool, urban and contemporary, whilst reminding us of the 20th century’s architectual history.“ – Marie
